Healthy Key Lime Pie Smoothie

April 13, 2016 by Juli 12 Comments

I dare to say spring has arrived in Southern Germany! I don’t know why but I tend to crave more green food when it gets warmer outside again. Maybe it’s also because some of my favorite foods are green: broccoli, spinach, asparagus, avocado, M&Ms just to name a few.

And of course as the basic bitch I am I have a love for green smoothies!

A couple of weeks ago I started to take a bit more care of myself and experiment with my diet. I try to keep my consumption of white sugar and processed food to a minimum and I also drastically decreased my grain consumption. I hate to say that I feel much better already. Well of course not really but bread…!!!!!! This week I am off dairy and I pray to all possible gods that it’s not dairy that makes me feel not my best because I can’t lose cheese. I just can’t!

But anyways… Whilst decreasing my consumption of what feels like 80% of my staple foods – well not really again but I feel a bit dramatic about it – I of course have to increase the amounts of other food in my diet. For my well-being and the well-being of my marriage I better not stay hungry for too long!

I also get pretty grumpy and that’s again neither good for myself nor for my marriage when I feel like I have to cut out desserts. I don’t have a huge sweet tooth but when the craving strikes I can’t just eat an apple and let it pass. I am just not working that way.

Dessert like Smoothies like this Healthy Orange Cheesecake Smoothie or this Healthy Carrot Cake Smoothie have worked quite well for me in the past and I am glad to say I have a few more desserts turned smoothies in my recipe book that are not only dairy free but also definitely do the trick when I want something healthy and desserty.

One of my absolute favorites is hands-down this Healthy Key Lime Pie Smoothie. Not only is it ridiculously healthy without sacrificing the taste of a dessert it also fits basically any dietary lifestyle I can think of right now. It is vegan, paleo, gluten-free yet defnitely doesn’t lack taste.

This Healthy Key Lime Pie Smoothie is amazingly creamy thanks to the healthy fats from the avocado. The sweetness from the mango and tartness provided by the lime balance out each other quite nicely.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 of a big ripe avocado
  • 1 cup ripe mango – frozen
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 1 cup non-dairy milk almond, cashew or macadamia works really well
  • zests of 1 lime
  • juice of 1/2 lime
  • 1 tsp agave sirup - optional if the mango is not sweet enough

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients in your food processor or blender and blend for about 2 minutes until everything is smooth

Notes

Instead of frozen mango you can as well use frozen avocado
If you don't have any frozen ingredients at hand just add a few ice cubes or crushed ice to your blender

Healthy Key Lime Pie SmoothieOkay perfect. It’s morning, I am hungry and I am going to make me a smoothie now. You guess which one πŸ˜‰ Because dessert smoothies are also totally acceptable for breakfast right?

So let’s have smoothies together now and please let’s all cross our fingers for me and my love affair with cheese.

Thanks and see you all tomorrow!

I love the colour of this smoothie – I always seem to be drawn to green foods and most of my favourite veggies, like you, are green.
I really hope you don’t have dairy issues – I went for a while without it and was very pleased to find I could bring it back into my diet with no side effects. I pray you are the same… For cheese and ice creams sake!

There’s something so yummy about green, it’s definitely a bit strange haha.
Oh god the thought alone of cutting out dairy makes me feel so bad it might be even worse than actual dairy side effects. Thank you! I hope for me it’s the same!

Um. HELLO GORGEOUS PHOTOS OF MOODY BACKDROPS AND OBNOXIOUS STRAWS.

Okay so key Lime pie. I was not a fan of it when I ate it, and actually (for the first time ever) preferred the crust on the actual pie.

Can’t wait to hear about the experiment- Dear God if cheese is banished.

Haha when you call these straws obnoxious you should see my straw drawer πŸ˜‰ But THANK YOU!

Oh god I didn’t knew Key Lime Pie until my first time in NYC. I got so obsessed and everything had to be Key Lime Pie. Key Lime Cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory, Key Lime Pie Ice Cream…. but it’s good to know you don’t like it because so I wouldn’t have to share with you πŸ˜›

If cheese has to be banned I need you to brainstorm for another vehicle for my dark cocoa powder!

This looks seriously good! I LOVE that you included mango in the mix. Yum, yum, yum!

I know how you’re feeling on the diet changes. When I was first diagnosed with coeliac I was on an elimination diet and when we were testing dairy and nuts (particularly peanut butter) I told Jesse the world would surely end if I had to cut either out of my diet πŸ˜› Luckily the world survived and so did I!

      Thank you πŸ™‚

I know what you mean. The sucky part is that my intolerances change all the time. It’s just constant trial and error. Luckily it doesn’t seem to be cheese πŸ™‚

You know my love of all things citrus. I am digging the sound of this smoothie, although I’ve never tried avocado in one before. I’m open to new things though.

I’ll cross my fingers on the cheese front. πŸ™‚

It is so good! I really really like it! You should totally try avocado in a smoothie. The fat makes it super rich and creamy!

Good lord I am so glad it’s NOT cheese! πŸ˜€
