Health-Boosting Antioxidants Smoothie

February 3, 2016 by Juli 7 Comments

People, it’s grey outside. Grey and wet and a little depressing. Aka it’s winter. It’s this time of the year where however heathy and full of vitamines your diet might be a little health-boost doesn’t hurt.

I am not the biggest fan of taking vitamines and other ‘magical supplements’ but sometimes helping my body a bit is necessary. Suffering from IBD for over 18 years now there are times, even when I feel quite alright, that I don’t get all the nutrition I need from my diet alone. The winter months are especially tricky. Variety in fruits and vegetables is sparse compared to the summer months in general and especially in produce carrying enough antioxidants.

Putting enough healthy food in your mounth is the key to being optimally supplied with nutrients. But it’s only one part of the game. Broadly speaking a healthy gut is necessary to make sure your body gets the best out of the food you eat. Here antioxidants come into play. They help clearing the gut of free radicals and thereby keep a healthy intestinal mucosa that is vital to absorbing essential nutrients.

But now enough of the medical talk let’s talk about how we get those antioxidants in. I vote for smoothies. Obviously.

I love this Health-Boosting Antioxidants Smoothie for various reasons. It’s rich and creamy and sweet as a dessert without being to overpowering thanks to the tartness of the raspberries. By a few simple hacks you can make sure this smoothie is most full of vitamins, magnesium, potassium, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

Drinking this smoothie just gives me a good feeling. And the best? It’s pink! I am a sucker for visually appealing food and this is one of my favorites.

It takes you literally less than 5 minutes to make this Health-Boosting Antioxidants Smoothie and next to adding value to a balanced nutrition it’s a nice setoff to all the grey out there. Though even when you’re blessed with better weather right now I wouldn’t turn this cutie down either. Because it’s just delicious!

Using so many frozen ingredients this smoothie also fits my need for a healthier milkshake experience. Because even though it’s wet cold and grey outside this smoothie does not only hopefully boost my health but it boosts my mood for sure. Sweet!

The food that boosts my health and mood (apart from coffee! Haha!) are dates – I love getting that little sugar hit pump but in a natural fudgy satisfying way! So good!

Coffee never fails to pick me up either 🙂
For some reason I don’t like dates until I mix them into a fudge or use them as a sweetener. Just plain they are too sweet for me.

And I love this, although anything with raspberries wins in my book. The benefits of whole foods, chock full of vitamins, nutrients and anti-oxidants always makes me feel better. Well, that and a side of cheese. 🙂 Dates are also a fantastic sweetener for smoothies too.

That’s what I do right now. A smoothie and later bread with melted cheese 🙂 That can’t go wrong!
Yes for dates as a sweetener! I like the sweetness way better than agave.

what if I want to use 4 dates?

Just kidding, I don’t even like dates in smoothies. They disappear! But…I shall replace it with cottage cheese lol!

I find that apples (for some odd reason) really pick me up…for 5 minutes then I’m hungry again!

Let me tell you what happened when I used 4 dates – not even kidding! The smoothie tasted too pink!

But Cottage cheese? I am definitely intrigued.

Apples always make me ravenous! So much for steady blood sugar levels 😛
