Hell yes, this is the last week at work before my much-needed vacation. I guess it’s safe to say that I am not in the best place right now. I know the signs and I hope this vacation will smooth everything out and I can come back to work in late September with more energy and some motivation.
I try to keep my Mondays light usually but today I feel in the mood to take a look behind the curtains of my distress. Join me?
Sometimes I really wonder what’s wrong with me! I’ve been complaining about my long working hours, tough schedule, pressure at work…. for what feels like forever and since two weeks everything has slowed down and we get to enjoy our well-deserved summer low! Ever since I am useless! I have way too much spare time for my good. I have 5-6h to myself every single day and I can’t cope with it at all. Stefan’s schedule hasn’t changed (actually it’s gotten worse over the last few weeks) so he’s out a lot more than I am. I am bored to death, lounge around and pester my friends on what’s app! All those who actually work find me pretty annoying and I can’t say that I am not massively annoyed by myself by now. Last week I cleaned the flat on a weekday! I even hoovered which I usually avoid at all costs. I even bribed people in the past to do it for me. I cook and eat all the time just to busy myself in the kitchen. I am so glad it’s only a week left because I can’t say what would happen if my life stayed like this for the next month or so.
You may wonder why I don’t stay in the office longer and get ahead of some work. Well yes, that would be a pretty good idea if the office hadn’t turned into a giant oven. We have a fan in here. It does a great job in moving the hot air from the left to the right and back again. We could open a window if there wasn’t still that giant construction area right under said window. An open window would turn the whole work day in a giant stress experiment. I have a degree in psychology – I recognize the pattern! It’s always about noise and heat!
We try to cope nonetheless and illegally keep open the evacuation route. My floor uses a coke bottle to keep the door open and the third floor uses a hanger! I wonder though from where they got the hanger? Did anyone bring it to work just to keep the door open? The construction area noise is a little duller that way. It doesn’t really change much about the temperature but at least we do something! Even doing something silly about an uncontrollable situation is way better than doing nothing.
But on Wednesday I had enough. I bluntly refused to come to the office for the rest of the week. We expected (and hit) the two hottest days of the year and as long as it’s not possible for the university to provide a workplace where you can actually work I was not going there with over 100°F! Thank god for home office and iced smoothies!
When finally Friday rolled around I was taking it easy. It was the meet the family day. I had a breakfast date with my mum and then Stefan and I met my dad and his partner for dinner. It had been a while that I met any of them and we were trying to catch up before we escape for the next 5 weeks.
On Saturday I went blueberry picking with my aunt again but it was kinda disappointing. Only small berries and many green ones in between. I guess the blueberry season comes to an end. Besides that it was pretty darn hot and we were sent to a place with no shadow at all.
In the evening we went to a BBQ my apartment building had arranged. To be honest I didn’t want to go. I am just not the socializing with the neighbors kind of person! But after being caught by some neighbors who all asked if we would come, pretending to be out wasn’t an option anymore. So we went. To my big surprise it wasn’t so bad at all!
Sunday was spent on the sofa. In the evening we went out for dinner with friends. We usually go for steaks. So did we this time. After my friend ‘accidentally’ knocked off his pint of ice water directly on my sister’s lap we were the center of attention. My sister cried out so loud, it was awesome! People believe me I haven’t laughed like that in forever! Sadly I have only a picture of the steak. Not of my sister in her wet pants 😀
And just out of a wee feeling of nostalgia I end this post today with a little vacation countdown:
- It’s 5 days till my vacation
- It’s 5 workdays till my vacations
- It’s 3 workouts till my vacation
- It’s roughly calculated 13 cups of coffee till my vacation
- More or less 6 times I need to charge my phone
- And more or less a 47 times I am telling anybody how much I need some time off until I actually have some time off.
