Thursdays are for thinking out loud! Let’s speak a little about my trip to Berlin this weekend! Pretty much anything that comes to my mind. No filter, no fuss!
The City and I – As we speak/ as you read/ right now I am already in Berlin. Which means for me 4 days in the German capital city! Lots of historic things have happened there. To most of them I am shockingly oblivious or at best I am only periphery aware of them as our history teachers in school never managed to actually teach anything after WWII. And let’s be honest, I’ve never been so very keen on contemporary history to feel the need to educate myself! And let’s not speak about politics – this would be quite embarassing for me.
News – This is maybe due to the fact that I can’t watch the news. Really I think I am physically not capable. My mind just wanders away to strange places and I can’t discuss about anything later at all.
Berlin the third – This is actually the third time for me in Berlin. I’ve never done any touristy things there before though. My first time was at the age of 9 when my friend’s family and I had a major car crash with our car exploding (not joke!) and the tow-truck driver’s wife kindly offered to go shoe and toothbrush shopping with us. My friend and I were barefooted. The second time I flew there 3 years ago on business and didn’t see much beside the taxi, the inside of the ESCP Europe Business College and the airport Starbucks. So this time I am up for exploring the city a bit.
Lost? – Which leads me to the fact that I really know nothing about Berlin and don’t even owe a map. Oh wait, I stay in Germany so I can at least rely on google. Phew! Not lost (hopefully)!
Flying – I am always super organized when I fly somewhere. I always fear to miss my flights. Like three hours before the flight I have to be at the airport. Two are okay if I don’t have any luggage to check-in. And if I am not I become quite jittery and annoying. I also don’t take any liquids with me. Not even lip balm or eye drops or stuff like that.
My last flight alone – was actually quite bumpy, figuratively speaking! On my outward flight I had 6-inch-blades scissors with me. Luckily I found them prior to the security check and I just handed it over to the security officer explaining myself. He gave me one of those looks! Fair enough! Though I wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t found it. On my return flight I tried to pass the security check with a 1,5 l bottle water. Dunno what was wrong with me on that day!
Coffee – Most probably I’ll end up at Starbucks at some point today. I am a predictable low-brow. That’s the way I am! No shame. Okay maybe a little 😉
On Duty – Actually I’ll be on duty this weekend. I am going to attend a conference at the Free University. It had cost a small fortune but I hope it will help with my thesis. The bad thing is I really really don’t want to go! Backing out would be nice but the fair had just been too high.
Travelling alone – I’ll have to survive four days without the hubby! It’s the longest seperation since I went alone to England 5 years back! Oh God, it’s been 5 years!!!
Narnia – The worst part actually is that I am going to miss one of two Narnia weekends.
Conference Shenanigans – Conferences are difficult for me. You don’t know people and I am definitely NOT good at small talk. You have to be smart all the time and people ONLY talk about research. Okay it’s the purpose of the whole thing but it gives me brain burn! That’s like freezer burn but for the brain.
The really good part is though that I am going to go to the conference with my friend Ulrike. We don’t attend the same workshops but we can sneak out together and skip the boring parts. And her husband is coming too and we’ll spend the spare time together. And they will graciously give me a ride back home.
